As the average life expectancy increases, people are becoming more and more interested in finding ways to slow down the aging process. According to Medical News Today, “Scientists now know that many factors – including physical exercise, sleep, depression, and certain gene mutations – are associated with reduced telomere length, and, by extension, can lead to premature biological aging… Whether telomere length is a marker of biological aging or a cause of it remains to be seen.” Studies have shown that hyperbaric therapy can help increase a person’s energy, improve their quality of sleep, increase the rate of serotonin production, and potentially lengthen the telomeres. All of these possess the ability to improve a person’s overall health and well-being.

  • Cell damage and cell death account for skin aging and appearance, HBOT assists in cell repair and promotes the growth of new cells.
  •  Studies have shown that hyperbaric therapy can help increase a person’s energy, improve their quality of sleep, increase the rate of serotonin production, and lengthen their telomeres so they don't "feel old anymore"
  • HBOT supports the immune system, which helps prevent illness in an aging patient.
  • Hyperbaric therapy up-regulates anti-inflammatory genes and down-regulates inflammatory genes, so a patient may experience less physical pain as they age.
  • Studies show it induces a regenerative affect in the body
  • Studies indicate HBOT increases telemere length, and clearance of senescent cells
  • Studies show it improves cognition, attention, focus, information processing speed and executive functions

Passing Time Easier with Hyperbarics
There is far more to the anti-aging movement than just fighting wrinkles (although it’s definitely a plus!). The aging population wants to stay mentally sharp and physically fit. Genetics and lifestyle play pivotal roles in how a person ages and while there is no way to stop the aging process, there are many things a person can do to prevent or slow down mental and physical deterioration.
As the body ages, tissue begins to break down faster than new cells can keep up to repair it. Production of collagen, the protein involved in giving skin its elasticity and firmness, slows down a little more each year after the age of 20. Research shows that an accumulation of oxidative stress as one ages accelerates the destruction of mitochondria, leaving the body at a deficit in its ATP (energy) production.

The brain also changes over its lifetime. The total volume of the brain shrinks approximately 5% per decade after the age of 40. The cerebral cortex also thins out as it ages. Much research has been done on how these changes affect how people think; many studies are in consensus that memory tends to be the skill that declines first, while cognition tends to remain steady in healthy elderly individuals.

The rate of mental and physical decline can vary depending on a person’s predisposed genetics and the quality of their lifestyle. A common misconception is that a person is stuck with the genes they are born with. In fact, genes are in constant flux; they can be turned on (up-regulated) or turned off (down-regulated) based on environmental exposures to nutrition, stress, exertion, oxygen, chemicals, organisms and more. Someone who spent their lives exercising regularly, ate healthy foods, kept direct sun exposure to a minimum, slept well, avoided stress, and generally took care of their body and wellbeing, is likely to age slower than a person who did not live a healthy lifestyle.

Hyperbaric therapy may be a valuable modality in anti-aging efforts. A randomized controlled clinical trial of 63 healthy older adults showed that hyperbaric therapy appeared to induce cognitive enhancements by positive changes in cerebral blood flow. Increased oxygenation to the brain may support neurological function and overall health. Hyperbaric therapy has been proven to increase the body’s ability to create stem cells and collagen which may help an aging patient keep a more youthful appearance. HBOT has also shown to be a useful tool to support the immune system, which could help prevent illness in an aging patient. Thanks to the ability of hyperbaric therapy to up-regulate anti-inflammatory genes and down-regulate inflammatory genes, a patient may experience less physical pain as they age.

My testimony on the use of Hyperbaric Chamber during Covid 19.

"I was in the hospital for 8 days and release but sent home with oxygen.

My levels without oxygen were in the high 80s and low 80s when walking. I was using an oxygen tank to maintain in levels in the 90s. I have a chamber in my home, and remind you with out oxygen tank, my levels drop into the 80s.

It was a real struggle. The first time I got into the chamber my levels were around 84%, closed it up and pressurized my level rose to 96% and my heart rate slowed. I slept in the chamber for 8 hours.

It was a very comforting 8 hours. I am still recovering from long covid and use the chamber as much as possible. Hyperbaric has made my recovery more comfortable and suggest it to every covid patient."

“It is no wonder the anti-aging industry is worth hundreds of billions of dollars with the myriad of popular creams, lotions, and supplements. But, there is one cutting edge treatment you might not have ever heard of and it’s called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). HBOT has been proven effective in treating virtually any condition in which poor circulation plays a role including everything from traumatic brain injury to ADD/ADHD, but the latest buzz on HBOT pertains to anti-aging.

HBOT has been a growing choice of many top actors, actresses, and models, whose skin is constantly in the limelight. Have they found the secret to looking young? Depending on how you define aging, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be the proverbial “fountain of youth.” HBOT promotes cell repair, age spots, saggy skin, wrinkles, poor collagen structure, and skin cell damage by increasing circulation to the most peripheral areas of the body, which is your skin. In a recent study, mice were exposed to UVB rays, known to prematurely age your skin, and when placed in oxygen chambers developed fewer wrinkles and showed fewer signs of tissue damage overall.

What is Aging?
So, what is aging and how do you define it? Aging appears to be a genetically programmed event. Biologically, scientists have found that the chromosomes in our cells progressively shorten each time the cell divides. Eventually, the chromosomes can shorten no further and stop dividing.

When this happens, the cells become sleepy and die. If this were the sole determinant of the length of a human life, then we would all live about the same length of time, plus or minus some genetic variation. In fact, as we all know, people’s life spans can vary widely, and this wide variation is largely due to the cumulative insults that a person’s body experiences over the course of a lifetime.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Premature Aging
Premature aging is a shortened lifespan due to the effects of various stressors on the human body. Most commonly known are alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. Tobacco alone causes a 15% average reduction in lifespan. Using the figure of 80 years for an average American adult’s lifespan, the smoker usually lives to 68 years of age, sometimes cut short from cancer and other health risks like emphysema and heart attacks. When alcohol, drugs, chemicals from food or environmental pollution, trauma, systemic infections, and myriad other insults are added, the reserve capacity of the human body is progressively lost resulting in a shortened life.

Insults to the human body cause progressive wounding of the body. This is easiest to see on brain blood flow scans such as SPECT and PET. Wounds in the brain on these scans are registered as areas of low blood flow/low oxygenation, which cause decreased neurological function. Most commonly, this decreased neurological function leads to the premature aging diagnosis called dementia. HBOT is a generic drug for repair of these brain wounds. Regardless of the causes of the brain insults or injuries, the end product is a stereotypical chronic wound that responds to low pressures of hyperbaric oxygen treatments. What research has shown in the past 30 years is that these “premature aging wounds” can be repaired and the patient improved neurologically, cognitively, behaviorally, and emotionally.

Repair of these chronic wounds is a reversal of premature aging by use of HBOT as an anti-aging treatment. This was illustrated with the brain scans of Dr. Harch’s dementia patients as presented to the House of Representatives in 2002 and 2004. The general dementia patient required 24-hr/day supervision and was facing institutionalization. After a two-month course of HBOT treatments, he returned to independent living that was unchanged four years later. With hyperbaric oxygen, the Alzheimer’s patient experienced the first improvement in cognitive function in the three years since his diagnosis. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy slowed the progression of his disease until he succumbed to a heart attack 4 years later. In both cases, HBOT helped prolong their lives and gave them the quality of life, thus functioning as an anti-aging tool.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments for “Normal” Aging
The question in this modern day is whether or not there is such a thing as “normal” aging. Given the pollution of our air, food, environment, ubiquitous exposure to automobile exhaust, second-hand smoke and carbon monoxide, heavy metals, dental amalgams, vaccines, anesthesia, chemicals, food additives, etc., one could make a case that we all age prematurely. If this is true, everyone could benefit from the restorative effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

There is evidence from the Russians that continued intermittent hyperbaric oxygen treatments in stroke patients resulted in a decreased incidence of recurrent strokes. This is purportedly due to the health effects of hyperbaric oxygen on blood vessels. In animal experiments, it has been shown that HBOT helps stabilize the inside lining of injured blood vessels. Hyperbaric oxygen treatments stimulate angiogenesis, growing new blood vessels into tissue, and in 2007 has been demonstrated to cause stem cell release from our bone marrow into our circulation. HBOT has been shown to have detoxification effects and suppresses inflammation, this is beneficial since most of our chronic diseases can be stemmed from chronic inflammation.

The Fountain of Youth?
In the meantime, for all of us who have some degree of accelerated or premature aging, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may, in fact, be an anti-aging tool since it plays a major role in acting as a stimulant promoting and activating gene sequences that code for growth and repair hormones. Many have suggested that HBOT will likely become appreciated as the fountain of youth by the Baby Boomer Generation whose life spans have been compromised by years of drug experimentation in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy will be able to restore waning brain function and prevent premature dementia.

We have our own hyperbaric oxygen chambers at many of our clinic locations where we treat a wide array of conditions such as traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, stroke, head injury, cerebral palsy, sports injuries, multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, healing after cosmetic surgery, ADD/ADHD, autism, psoriasis and many more. Dr. Shai Efrati: Director of the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research, Assaf-Harofeh Medical
Under the management and guidance of Dr. Efrati, the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research has become the largest most occupied hyperbaric center in the world, currently treating more than 120 patients a day. Dr. Efrati initiated a research program focusing on the neuroplasticity (regeneration of brain tissue) of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). In the first clinical study it was proved that HBOT can induce neuroplasticity in stroke and traumatic brain injuries even years after an acute incident. The vital clinical results gained from the research program have shed fascinating new light on regeneration of the injured brain as well as aging tissues.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of hyperbaric chamber do you use?
We use soft chambers that reach 1.3 atmospheres of pressure. This is considered mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy and has several advantages over hard chambers. When it comes to pressure with HBOT, more is not necessarily better. Most chronic or non-emergency conditions respond better to lower pressures. You still get a healing dose of oxygen and pressure without the higher risks that come with higher pressure chambers. It is much more affordable than hard chamber sessions and it is even available for home use for those who have a hard time coming into the office for the recommended number of treatments.

Am I a good candidate if my Doctor doesn’t think it will help?
A study found that 75% of medical schools offer little to no education on hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Most doctors have very limited understanding of hyperbarics. A practitioner with specialized knowledge of hyperbaric oxygen therapy will be better suited to answer your questions. When you consider how safe, natural and powerful hyperbarics can be, it is worth doing more research and seeking a second opinion from a knowledgeable practitioner. Many doctors who do educate themselves on hyperbaric oxygen therapy end up being very supportive and even change their practice of medicine to offer it.

How does hyperbaric oxygen therapy help?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy delivers up to 3x the normal amount of oxygen throughout the body. This helps with healing, reducing inflammation, energy production, digestion, detoxification, concentration, recovery, etc. Many parts of the body do not receive sufficient oxygen, are damaged, or “turned off” because of an illness, or injury. For example tendons do not receive as much blood flow as muscles and are often more likely to be injured or strained. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy gets more oxygen to all parts of the body, reawakening cells, such as brain cells after a stroke, or heart cells after a heart attack. It gives the body a huge advantage to heal, repair and regenerate itself. As a result of the increased oxygen, the part of every cell in your body that produces energy (mitochondria) becomes stronger and more efficient, many negative symptoms from health conditions and aging disappear, and you have more energy and mental clarity. The more sessions you do, the more these changes become permanent. It positively affects your DNA and can turn some negative DNA markers off and turn positive ones on. For example, eliminating many allergic reactions and even putting some diseases into remission.

Does insurance cover hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is FDA approved, covered by insurance, for 14 conditions, even though many other conditions benefit from this treatment. It is used for over 200 different conditions in other countries with extensive research supporting its use. If hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used for any condition other than the 14 approved conditions it will be considered “off label’ and therefore not covered by insurance companies. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a regenerative treatment and insurance companies, unfortunately, have a bad track record of covering regenerative medicine. The FDA approved conditions are: air embolism, gas embolism, acute traumatic ischemia, burns, carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation, diabetic foot ulcers, exceptional blood loss, decompression sickness, gas gangrene, necrotizing infections, severe anemia, skin grafts and flaps and wound healing. If you have one of the FDA approved conditions it is recommended that you seek care at a facility that can bill insurance for the treatment.

Is hyperbaric oxygen safe?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is extremely safe, especially the type offered at Stronglife. Our chamber goes to 1.3 ATM which is the equivalent pressure of being 10 feet under water. We also provide supplemental oxygen directly to you through a nasal cannula instead of pressurizing the entire chamber with 100%. This means there is no risk of oxygen toxicity and no risk of a small spark causing a fire or explosion, with higher pressure and higher oxygen levels the risks go up.

The main risk with any form of hyperbaric oxygen treatment is the (small) risk of damage to the ear drums. While the chamber is being pressurized, you will notice pressure building in the ears (similar to when on a plane or when under water). It is important to be able to equalize the pressure in your ears by yawning, pinching your nose and swallowing or pinching your nose while yawning. Most people are easily able to equalize the pressure. We will be standing by the whole time to assist with the process, and can pause the chamber or release pressure for those few who have a difficult time.

While the majority of people notice they feel better after their HBOT session, there is at times a detox reaction also known as a Herxheimer reaction. This can result in flu-like symptoms including body aches, mild fever, fatigue, nausea or other symptoms. This is caused when harmful microorganisms die off and move towards elimination in the body. While this can be an unpleasant experience it is actually a good thing because the treatment is helping the body excrete these harmful mircoorganisms from the body like Lyme bacteria, Epstein-Barr Virus, mold toxins and others. After several treatments these symptoms will fade and are replaced by higher energy levels and a greater feeling of wellbeing.

Does hyperbaric oxygen therapy interact with medications:
Very few medications are of concern (listed below).
Bleomycin
Cisplatin
Doxorubicin
Sulfamylon
Disulfiram
Mafernide Acetate

Can I do hyperbaric oxygen therapy if I am claustrophobic:
Yes, we are standing by the entire time to turn off the chamber and let you out at a moment's notice. We have had many claustrophobic patients do the full treatment reporting afterwards that they had a pleasant experience and felt quite relaxed. The hyperbaric oxygen stimulates a relaxation response in the body, and most just read, use their phones or take a nap. Most are also surprised by how roomy the chamber feels on the inside.

What does it feel like to do hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
When asked, patients relate that it is a very relaxing experience. Before you get in we recommend using the bathroom. Then you remove any sharp objects from your pockets and remove your shoes. You climb into the chamber, it is on a platform, for those who have a hard time getting down on the floor. You will have an oxygen tube feeding oxygen directly to your nose. You lie down and relax on a thick pad and pillows. In the first 5 minutes the chamber comes up to pressure during which time you clear your ears multiple times, like when you are on an airplane or going over a summit while driving. After that, you’ll hear fresh air coming in and going out, like white noise. Many patients can sit up if they choose, but most prefer to lay down and relax. The last 5 minutes when it is depressurizing, you can feel some mild pressure on your ears, but most don’t even need to clear or “pop” their ears. Once it has depressurized, we unclasp it and you climb out. Most patients say they feel very relaxed afterward, “like walking on a cloud all day, “ chronic pain patients have told us, “it was the first time in months I wasn’t in pain.” There is no downtime, no need to take off work, you can immediately resume your normal activities.

Are there times it is not advised to do hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
For the following situations, it is not recommended.
Untreated Pneumothorax (punctured lung)
Serious sinus congestion
Sickle Cell Anemia
High Fever
Hereditary Spherocytosis
COPD
Pregnancy
